When it comes to exploring a nation, few modes of transportation offer the same level of immersion and intimate connection as cycling. As avid cyclists, we decided to venture beyond the traditional tourist destinations and explore our own country and other parts of Asia in a unique way – by cycling. We encountered stunning landscapes, vibrant urban areas, and unexplored villages along our journey.

Our country, with its picturesque terrain and rich cultural heritage, was our first choice for a cycling tour. We started our journey in Hanoi, the bustling capital city known for its chaos and charm. From there, we navigated through the narrow streets of the Old Quarter, witnessing the everyday lives of the locals and soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of this historical city.

Leaving Hanoi behind, we cycled through serene rural areas, passing by rice paddies, ancient temples, and traditional villages. The scent of blooming flowers filled the air as we pedaled along, surrounded by lush greenery and breathtaking landscapes. It was a truly immersive experience, allowing us to connect with the natural beauty and cultural richness of Vietnam.

As we made our way south, we encountered the famous Hai Van Pass, a mountainous route that offers panoramic views of the coastline. The challenging ascent was rewarded with a jaw-dropping vista, overlooking the azure waters and golden sandy beaches below. The sense of accomplishment combined with the awe-inspiring scenery made this part of the journey truly unforgettable.

Continuing southwards, we reached Hoi An, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its well-preserved ancient town. Riding through the streets of Hoi An felt like stepping back in time as we marveled at the traditional architecture, colorful lanterns, and bustling markets. The city’s rich history and cultural significance were evident at every turn, making it a highlight of our cycling venture.

Leaving Vietnam behind, we set our sights on other Asian nations known for their cycling-friendly landscapes. Cambodia, with its vast plains and ancient temples, offered a unique rider’s perspective. We pedaled through rural areas, where friendly locals greeted us with smiles and cheering children. The journey took us to iconic sites such as the majestic Angkor Wat, an architectural masterpiece and a testament to the grandeur of the Khmer Empire.

Thailand in Southeast Asia, with its diverse landscapes and vibrant urban areas, was another highlight of our cycling tours. We explored the bustling streets of Bangkok, the never-sleeping capital city, before venturing into the countryside dotted with ancient ruins, lush national parks, and charming villages. Riding through the breathtaking scenery of northern Thailand, we discovered hidden gems off the beaten path, including secluded waterfalls, peaceful temples, and hill tribe communities.

Myanmar, a country known for its untouched beauty and rich cultural heritage, was another destination we explored on our cycling holiday. From the ancient temples of Bagan, where thousands of temples dot the landscape, to the tranquil Inle Lake, where floating villages and leg-rowing fishermen captured our hearts, Myanmar offers a cycling experience like no other. The warm hospitality of the locals and the sense of stepping into a bygone era made our time in Burma truly magical.

Throughout our cycling adventures in Vietnam and Asia, we not only discovered the beauty of the landscapes but also the beauty of the people and their cultures. From sharing a meal with a local family to joining a traditional ceremony, every interaction left a lasting impression on us. Cycling allowed us to connect with the locals on a deeper level, breaking down barriers and fostering an understanding and appreciation of the diversity of Asia.

As we pedaled our way through our country, Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar, we realized that the true joy of cycling lies not only in reaching a destination but also in the journey itself. The freedom to go at our own pace, the exhilaration of conquering challenging terrains, and the opportunity to immerse ourselves in the sights, sounds, and smells of each place – these are the experiences that make cycling in Asia an extraordinary adventure.
